Take a day trip to Isla Contoy: Isla Contoy is a small island about the size of Isla
Mujeres, located about 20 miles north. Aside from a handful of park rangers, the
only inhabitants of the island are about 70 different bird species, iguanas, turtles,
lizards, hermit crabs and boa constrictors. The waters surrounding the island are
home to a rich host of sea life including brilliant corals and tropical fish. The island
is a protected area and one of the finest places to witness nature in an unspoiled
setting. Access is restricted and only a certain number of tourists are granted a visit
each day. More information can be found at islacontoy.org.
