What’s the best way to get to Isla Mujeres?
This is a question I see asked about most often!
You’ve landed at the Cancun airport and now you need to get to Isla Mujeres.
Some want the cheapest, some want the fastest and everyone wants to get there safely.
There are three ways to get from the airport to the ferry that will take you to the island.
We’ll start with cheapest, if you are a solo traveler or a couple, taking the ADO bus from the airport to the downtown Cancun bus station and then getting a taxi, or if you don’t have luggage you can take a colectivo van or city bus, is the cheapest. The bus from the airport departs approximately every 30 minutes beginning at around 8am until 11pm, the cost is 72 pesos, about $3.75 us. Once at the Cancun bus station we usually take a taxi for about 60 pesos, about $3.00us. For two of us the cost is $10.50us plus any tips. This is the cheapest way to get to the ferry, but not usually the quickest. You can check the ADO bus website for times and if there are price changes.
Next would be to arrange for a shared shuttle from the airport to the ferry. Agai, for one or two people this is quite economical and normally faster than the bus. Best day is the only company I know of who offers shared shuttle service from the airport. The cost is $8.00us for one or $17.00us for two.
The third, and most popular way to get to the ferry fast is a private transfer service. This is something you reserve in advance, see links below. There are many companies who offer this service, you can purchase ferry tickets, drinks, snacks, car seats for the kids and other essentials when you reserve with any of the three I am going to mention. All have stellar reputations and you can’t go wrong with any of these. There are slight pricing differences between each one, so check them out to find the best price.
Canada Transfers is another great company, and you can even pay with Canadian dollars if you wish.
Happy Shuttle is a new favorite of mine, very good service. Coupon code Islalove10 for 10% discount!
Cancun Accessible if you need assistance with a handicap accessible service.
We’ve used all of the options above except for Cancun Accessible.
Ultramar Puerto Juarez ferry schedule and prices
Note: Prices shown under Quintana Roo Plan and Inapam are for residents not tourists.
There are two other ferry services, Marinsa & Naveganto, they leave from the Puerto Juarez dock just up the street from Gran Puerto. The transfer services take you to the Gran Puerto Ultramar ferry dock.

If your plane is late and you can’t make the last ferry, you’ll need to spend the night in Cancun and go to the island in the morning.
Some recommended hotels to have as a back-up plan.
